Making a bonsai is relatively easy. All you need is a bonsai pot, a small tree, some soil, and an idea of what you want your tree to look like. Once you have created an image in your mind, you may begin to create your own unique, natural piece of art.

The first thing that you will need is your tree. You can either order one from our extensive selection of stater stock or you can actually go out into the wild and collect a specimen of your choice.

Please note that when collecting from the wild you should be aware of your local laws pertaining to rare and endangered species.

Once you have settled on which tree you want to work with, you can start planting it into your ceramic bonsai pot. After it is planted, you can begin to work on the tree itself.

There are different ways to change the shape of a tree. One is by pruning which is simply cutting away the branches that you do not want. Pruning must be done regularly to keep the tree's shape. You never want your bonsai to look like a little overgrown bush.

If you want to change the shape of the branches or even the trunk you can wire them. Wiring the tree means wrapping copper wire around the wood and along the length of the area that you want to change. After the wire is on you gently bend the branch into the shape that you want. The wire will hold the branch in that shape. Instead of having a straight branch, you could have a branch that curls around to give it the feeling of an old and gnarled limb.

Pottery used for bonsai comes from Japan and China. These pots are usually handmade and finished with unique glazes. In the East, a family who makes pottery is distinguished by the quality and colors of their glazes and closely guards the secret of its creation.

Don't you mean "How to make a bonsai FROM a plant?" Actually, bonsai is a design/style of ANY plant. The previous answer gave you bad information because most plants are either for indoor OR outdoor, not BOTH. You can make a bonsai of a even a small seedling, but of course, the older ones will be larger, right? There are MULTIPLE methods used in developing a bonsai. One of the best ways to get the answer to your question is with a bonsai book. You are welcome to visit my bonsai nursery and it will be good for you to look at the Bonsai Care page of my site:

transplant it in open earth... it will take some extra time to grow in to a tree... however you have to be careful while transferring from indoors to out doors... do it successively... from indoors to semi shady... from semi shady to outdoors... giving each stage a month... lest the plant may die...
