The cut-off date is the assumed date of birth of Christ. So, even the events that are stated to have happened during the life time of Christ, should be referred to as AD.

BC = Before Christ
AD = Anno Domini (Year of Our Lord).

contrary to popular opinion AD means 'anno domini' which means 'in the year of our Lord', it does not mean 'after death'. chirist lived in AD.
