An acronym uses the initial letters (i.e SAM for Surface to Air Missile) a pnemonic uses words (i.e Richard of York Gave Battle In Vain to remeber the colours of the rainbow)

The correct comparison would be between acronym and mnemonic.
There is no word like' pnemonic'.
However 'Pneumonic' mean related to lung (pneumon = lung).
'Mnemon' = memory or mindful.
Mnenonic and pneumonic are pronounced differently.
An acronym may be used as mnemonic but a mnemonic cannot be used as acronym.

Almost everyone has "acronym" correct. But only RM is entirely correct about "mnemonic". "Mnemonic" is related to MEMORY -- a "mnemonic device" is ANY kind of aid or trick used to help you remember ANYTHING (not just spelling).

The device can be anything from an expression like "Roy G Biv" to a sentence ("King Phillip came over from Greece Sunday" to remember the scientific classification system --from 'kingdom' to 'species'), to a poetic rule ("I before E except after C. .. "). . . . any trick at all that helps you to remember. It may even be that you USE an acronym AS a mnemonic device (example ROYGBIV)

One more example, offered respectfully: you can remember that 'mnemonic' begins with "m" because it has to do with M-emory". (The "pn" combination is found elsewhere, e.g., in "pneumatic".)

An acronym is a kind of abbreviation. It is a word formed by taking letters from a phrase that is too long to use comfortably.
eg: Laser is an acronym of Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation

Pnemonic is when you use a different word with the same starting letter as an easy way to remember something
- example:
colours of the rainbow
RED (richard) ORANGE (of) YELLOW (York) GREEN(gave)BLUE (Battkle) INDIGIO (In) VIOLET (Vain).
