The tub is enamel. I prefer to clean it, but I have heard that there is a paint or something to cover these old tubs. Has anyone every used it and what is it?

I am a custodian for many years and the best things I have used is Dow "Scrubbing bubbles" cleaner. If it's soap scum your trying to get rid of. Also good old Comet cleanser(not Ajax) or any other brand works really well too. Then if you have to bring out the big guns use Tilex or other brand of tile and grout cleaner that should do it. If that doesn't, you may have to replace the tub.

I faced a similar problem. My job was to clean apartments for new tenants. The old tenants left the tub coated with paint!

After several tries, I settled on good old Comet. BUT with an added zing. I used 0000-grade steel wool and Comet. It took a lot of elbow grease but between the abrasive cleaner and the abrasive effect of steel wool, it finally was clean. BTW - 0000-grade is extremely fine and will not harm enamel if you use it only occasionally.

Try this-------- Castrol makes a product called Superclean. Costs about $4 a bottle. Spray a small section of the tub and allow it to penetrate for about 15-20 minutes. Don't let it dry completely. Then scrub with a bristle brush or a 3M Pad. If that works, do the rest of the tub. If not, I doubt that anything will clean it. Have fun.

CLR is what we used as a last resort to clean a bathtub after a tenant (who apparently didn't wash tub out for 6 months) moved. It really worked well.

you can get this stuff called the Works it is at wal-mart for about $2.00 a bottle. u just squirt it all around the tub and you can see it coming off the tub as soon as you put it on there. do not get it on your hands wear rubber gloves and wipe the WORKS all over ur tub. it will look like it is a new tub. i have used it for years because i live in the country no city water and my water has bad iron and sulfur in it. it does work.
