Usually it is about control. They blame it on something that the woman has done but it is really because they want to establish some control.

Women batter men too. Quite often (and more than is ever reported). Why do people hurt other people? It has nothing to do with men or women. People often just want to control other people. Look at Abu Ghraib, or read up on some of the psychology tests that have been done on imprisonment. If you believe that hurting or torturing someone will keep them basically cowed, then you will probably do it.

Read "When Love Hurts: A Woman's Guide to Understanding Abuse In Relationships" by Jill Cory & Karen McAndless-Davis.

Wife abuse is due to a belief system (He is Central, Superior and Deserving).

The belief held support their actions to maintain power and control. Recent studies support this.

It is not about anger management. If it was he would be lashing out at more people around him (and those guys do exist too but are less the norm). It is not about childhood abuse as many people abused go on to be non-abusers after those experiences.

Yes, it may be about learned behaviour but its the beliefs learned and held that keep it going.

A man can change IF he changes his value/belief system and HE really wants to.

Because they are weak poor excuse human beings. It could be because maybe they seen it when they grew up or they feel so puny that it makes them feel like a big bully to hit their wife. No one really knows why they batter women but if I was one of those women believe me a nice big iron skillet will be used if any man tried to do that to me.

it is easy for them to hit on the battered woman and get what they want from her, as she has suffered many years with self esteem issues, and is an easy mark. she feels flattered when men seem to want her, boost her low self worth that being married to an abuser has taken away.

They're insecure and a lot of times it's "learned" behavior -- that's what they grew up with. Even if they despised that behavior in their family unless they get help the majority of them end up the same way. They have no respect for themselves or women -- they wouldn't do it to another man -- I'd run as fast as I could away from such a person instead of trying to analyze him.

As with rape or molestation, a lot of times its about control. The man may have been abused as a child and this is his only way of controlling his life. If he is willing to get help then that is a step in the right direction.

wife beaters are normally insecure, have personality issues.
Women should not tolerate this and SHOULD STOP DENYING THAT THEY ARE BATTERED.
They can talk to close friends and tell the police.
these are the angels around who can help.
