all USB ports on a computer may not be the same especially in some 2-3 year old models. The front ports are usually slower and the rear ports are the USB 2.0. Mainly its a chipset limitation. on a laptop I really don't know. I don't really hook many things up to a laptop for power consumption reasons.

They all should all be USB 2.0 and share the bandwidth across all ports. Unless Dell put a front panel assembly that only supports USB 1.2 data speeds.
