Its either because they are living out a fantasy, being something they cant be. Or they are too scared / paranoid to give out real information.... cause someone might hunt them down.
Main reason though... is they can. There is no one they have to face, so there is no need for them to be honest. If they tried what they did on the internet in real life... they'd be caught out. A geek trying to be kewl in a night club would get shot down, a wannabe gansta taking his lie to the streets or the play ground will get stomped... so on and so on.
Animosity... good reason to be honest, Great reason to lie.

Well for some it is a saftey net, if no one knows who you are, or where you really live, then it is going to be hard to track that person down. There has been several serier killers on line, and when the internet first started a woman who wanted to die, hired one over the net, she went and meant him and he killed her. Now if you go into a chat room that is for depression, they will tell you in there do not tell anything about yourself, cause they know they have some people that would stalk . So to my knowlegde that would be why people do not always tell the truth
even though they may lie about the things about, they still most of the time tell you the truth, ifn they are telling you about something in theirn past.

Because on the Internet they can be anything they wanna be. Everything they feel they'll never be in real life. Or everything they fear to be in real life because they fear extreme changes or other things.
Another reason could also be that they feel their life isn't interesting enough, that it's boring and they don't wanna look boring.
Anyway, no matter how you look at it, I think lying on the Internet, just shows you aren't satisfied with your life, that there are so many other things that you'd like to be.
Or...that you're simply paranoid and think that those you meet on the net will come and kill you if you tell them anything true about yourself?

Sadly, it is many reasons.
One: people want to mostly pretend that they are something that thery're not and see fit to lie to glorify themselves.
Two: people want you to buy their filthy worhtless products.
Three (and this one plugs heavily into One): They are worried that are going to be judged harshly by society.

They probably think thats what you want to hear. Look at what we have in office they dont tell you the truth and you still vote for them.
