In 1891, Dr. James Naismith created the game of basketball to keep his students at today's Springfield College occupied during the long winters in Springfield, Massachusettes. It all started with a peach basket nailed to an elevated track 10 feet off the ground (which is still current, standard rim height).

The first official game occured in a YMCA gym on January 20, 1892.

The first recorded collegiate game occured on April 8, 1893 with Geneva College vs. New Brighton YMCA (Geneva won). The first game using the 5 on 5 scheme that is now present in the game was January 18th, 1896 when Minnesota State School of Agriculture (Now University of Minnesota St. Paul) defeat Hamline College in Iowa City, Iowa. The NCAA was founded in Chicago in 1906 and the first NCAA Men's College Basketball Championship was held in 1939 where University of Oregon won. Dr. Naismith coached at University of Kansas for sometime and a student of his at Kansas, named Adolf Rupp went on to become one of the most dominant coaches in NCAA history at the University of Kentucky.

In 1946 the National Basketball Association (NBA) was formed and the American Basketball Association (ABA) followed in 1967.

The International Basketball Federation was formed in 1932, but at the time consisted of strictly amateur players. Professionals were designated in 1989. The Olympics added Basketball as an official event in 1936.

Women's Basketball began in 1892 when a P.E. teacher at Smith College modified Naismith's rules for women. In 1926 the AAAU backed the first women's basketball championship, complete with men's rules.

February 15, 1994. With 15:34 left in the 2nd half the Kentucky wildcats were down 37-68 to the LSU Tigers. By the end of the game Kentucky had beaten LSU 99-95, alot of help comeing from 11 second half 3 pointers. This is the Largest 2nd half comeback in Division I history. I am not sure about the biggest all time defecit.

Well I believe from what I recall that the game was first invented by a Canadian born man who was looking for an indoor game to play during the winter at a YMCA in Boston Massachusetts. I think his name was Naismith or something like that. He used peach baskets attached to the wall and a ladder was used to get the ball out of the basket. Some have credited one of those Native Central American cultures (Aztec, Maya, Olmec, not sure which) for having invented the game since their game seemed very similar to basketball.

Basketball was invented by Dr. James Naismith, a college professor, because he wanted a sport to keep his athletes in shape between football and baseball seasons. Dr Naismith became the first basketball coach of the University of Kansas (Jayhawks, Lawrence). KU has consistently been in the NCAA play-offs and several NBA players are KU alumni.
