For very practical reasons, this practice of polygamy must be viewed from every angle, including the cost to the average taxpayer.

When someone is married within the church, the church has every right to practice it's own religion and every citizen should be allowed to practice their own religion or faith...Having said that:

The question comes up that if the State does not recognize multiple wives due to polygamy, and the wife of someone with multiple wives becomes pregnant, under the law, the pregnant woman (wife of the Mormon) becomes eligible as an unwed mother, to collect welfare and or public assistance. If someone has a child, that person, or persons (mother and father), should be totally responsible for the cost and caring of that child, not the state. True, many people fall on hard times and need assistance, but, it is not the intent of an honest person to collect welfare before the child is born.

The laws of child abuse and sexual intercourse between an adult an a minor must be strictly enforced. The laws regarding Statutory Rape, an adult having sex with a minor, must be federalized and strictly monitored by the federal government and not be left up to the states which can easily be influenced by large organizations through campaign funding and financing of selected candidates to condone, and at times, permit sex between a minor and an adult.

The current situation regarding the trial of Warren Jeffs (the head of a Mormon religious sect) had been brought to fruition because of the national attention and awareness of what was going on in parts of the mid-west between minors and adults. And, often at times money changed hands to secure a minor for an older man in some form of religious ceremony that allowed polygamy to include minors. No child, under any and all circumstances, should ever be allowed to be sold, or selected, to be someone's wife or mistress.

This is the sickest form of liberalism at it's height and disgust, being practiced in parts of the mid-west by people who refuse to speak out directly under some phony cloak of religion on the matter of Statutory Rape.

No child should ever be subjected to the advances of an older man for religious purposes (or any other purpose) in a country that practices the separation of church and state. With the laws in place, everyone should be entitled to practice their own religion in his or her own way and not expect the taxpayers to foot the bill through illegitimate intent nor should anyone be permitted to break the law and endanger or threaten the life or well-being of a child.

The courts must recognize and respect the absolute rights of a minor. It is the legal definition of 'child or minor' that must be fiercely protected.

The well being of the child is paramount. Federalize the laws governing Statutory Rape as a criminal offense.

child abuse ok yeah that is bad, but multiple wives, hey if a guy wants that kind of headache let and the WOMEN are consenting then it really should not be any of our buisness. i have a wife and i couldnt think of taking care of another, but as long as noone is hurt then i dont really care.
i would like to know however where you heard about them being married at 12 - 13 though and the abuse thing it would a shame to allow that however.

No man should be allowed to have multiple wives. Those Mormons should be forced to have only one wife and many girlfriends just like the rest of us.

Polygamy is bad and gay marriage is good?

If we allow one, we should allow the other. Also polyandry, group marriage, line marriage and any other kind of marriage people can dream up.

Or we can just keep marriage between one man and one woman and not rock the boat.

It is their way of life and it is not the place of the government to interfere.
