I would suggest some fancy guppies, as they are many different colors and they will breed, so you can get maybe 4 and soon have many more than that. I particularly like the blue-gold variety http://www.fancyguppy.com/pictures.htm

Glofish are some of the brightest most colorful tropicals I have ever seen and can be researched at http://www.glofish.com/photos.asp

If you want larger fish that are colorful, you can also look into gouramis. Look at http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/scateg.cfm?pCatId=882 and although not all of these are commonly available, you can find Dwarf, Blue, Gold, Powder Blue, and Kissing everywhere. You may not want to mix these with the smaller fish.

I trust lots of the above ideas. Small tetras as an occasion: i like neons, glo-easy, serape (those are my favorites). I additionally agree that the quick breeding are no longer likely the main suitable. you may desire to get a community of all male guppies, that could desire to be a exceptionally tank. i've got by no skill had cories myself, yet i think of they're wonderful interior the tanks on the keep. Please don't get African cichlids. in case you place them in an 18 gallon tank they'll finally end up killing eachother, or a minimum of stressing eachother out sufficient that they are depressing for many of their lives. Even the dwarf African species could desire to be stored in sufficiently vast communities to disperse aggression which you will no longer rather shop them in something smaller than a 30 gallon. you would be waiting to stumble on a single South or Centeral American cichlid that could desire to do o.k. in that length tank, yet even then it could be pushing it, and that could desire to be with a single fish. (Angelfish are South American Cichlids, by utilising the way - and extreemly messy ones at that) i'm hoping that when you have had this tank for awhile you agree directly to attempt a bigger tank, and get some African cichlids, they're georgous, basically no longer in this length tank. I have a forty four gallon freshwater tank with 4 male guppies, 8 female guppies,2 female balloon-bellied mollies, and 1 male balloon-bellied molly and 5 neon tetras. It makes for a very colorful tank. I do have to offer a few words of warning, though. If you mix male and female livebearers (mollies and guppies) You end up with LOTS of babies! I have about 60 fry in smaller tanks from this group of fish alone. Also mollies and guppies don't always get along.

African chiclids have the best color usually, though they are aggressive you have to watch what kind of fish you mix.
You also should know alot about fishkeeping to work with them.
I have had salt water in a 30 gallon for 5 years now, very colorfull fish, and after the first 5 months there is little maintinence.
if you want to stay basic, there are alot of colorfill fish in the tetra, and barb families. I had a 55 with green tiger barbs, red tail sharks and things of that nature and it looked great. best to choose something basic if it is your first setup.
you may start with neons and dianos , maybee mollies until you get used to fishkeeping.

For a group of colorful fishes that can live together in a 40 gallon, you would be hard pressed to beat tetras. They are also common, inexpensive and generally speaking easy to maintain.

well for a good colorful addition I recommend adding either a group of female bettas or a single male betta. if you chose a male don't add fish that have long flowy fins or are overly agressive. females though are like any other tropical fish of their size when it come to compatibility. here is a great site that sets tropical fish breeds into compatible groups and what size tanks are needed!

My absolute favorite website is www.aquahobby.com they have featured fish tanks, help on DIY projects as well as information & photos on many fish species freshwater and saltwater, as well as plants. Also posted w/fish species are reviews and experiences of owners of the specific fish. You can also send in your own photos of your tank and fish. This site has helped me greatly.

you have a lot of choices. liveaquaria.com is a great site to see what there is. but dont order them from the internet. after you get an idea of what you want just write it down and bring it to a local pet shop. whatever you do dont go to petco, petsmart, walmart or any places like that. you should find a smaller place that takes good care of their fish.
