I have an old '87 Dodge Aries Wagon which is slowly going down the tubes. There is an oil leak because of a broken gasket so I'll be taking it to my mechanic this Tuesday to get that fixed and also to just get it serviced. Usually I have this done only once a year. Should this be done more often?

I've received some excellent answers here. My car does need to be replaced and I'm figuring out a way to save the money to buy another. It's difficult to save when you're on disability and don't work, but I know it's possible. Thanks everybody!

Any car with high miles is going to eventually have more service issues. Generally speaking you should have a full tune up every 30,000 miles. There are some small "mini-services" that can be done every 15,000 miles. If you get a good tune up this time around, then getting the oil changed every 3500 miles will help. I also have the mechanic check my fluids (transmission, antifreese, etc) each time they do an oil change. In order to help keeps costs down, I generally have the brakes & allignment done alternating with my tune ups. That way I don't have to get hit with bills for brakes and tune up at the same time. Because your vehicle is 20 years old, you can anticipate that more and more problems will come up. You might want to set a plan in place to replace this vehicle for something else within the next 15,000 miles. If you work on it now, then when you get to that point, you'll have a good down payment as well as time to decide exactly what you want. I never buy new, because the second you drive a new car off the lot, it loses about 20% of it's value. I generally buy a car that's about 2 years old. Best of luck to you.

Well a car should be serviced every 5,000km if you use non syntethic oil or 10,000 if you use pure syntethic oil. If your car is old you can service it more and ask your mechanic to check the car more often if you don't feel good about it. Also notice for strange sounds(not normal) and if you don't feel right about it, you can send it to the mechanic to check it out. Usually sounds is an indication of the health of the car. Strange sounds that is not normal is an indication that something is not right and if it is not rectified it could go worst and they car may break down. Just like humans, early detection can sometimes saves one life.

A CAR SHOULD have a service every 6000 miles, and a super type service every 24000 miles. and the 'cambelt' changed every 60-75000 miles, depending on make.

you should get your car serviced every 3 months or 3000 miles, whichever comes first, unless you use a good synthetic oil, then follow the recomended service interval the oil manufacturer recommends

Read the drivers manual, if it has one. Oil change every 3,000 miles. Tires rotated every 10,000 miles. Tran. fluid & filter, 75,000 miles. If you want a car to last it's expected lifetime, take care of it or you will owe lots of money all the time. Or you will by cars lots of times.

you are lucky to get by with just once a year. Being the age it is I would go in a little more often then just once a year. But if its going down the tube as you call it i would seriously be looking at replacing it.

that depends on how you drive it. check what the mechanic actually does to your car. most of the time you can do it yourself for way way cheaper. or you can ask some friends. ,most of the time someone will know how to do it and you will save alot of money
