I live sort of live between the two cities, my family are from Liverpool and are avid Liverpool FC fans and my boyfriend is a Man United Fan and they dont get on they hate each other. Which is not nice for me. I have also heard of people from Liverpool going to Manchester and getting abuse about their accent and vise vera. Anyone know the history?

The history of the two cities not getting on is to do with the Manchester Ship Canal opening and taking trade away from the docks at Liverpool and into the centre of Manchester.

The history of the football teams is probably just due to their proximity to each other and jealousy. Liverpool are historically the most successful club in England (18 championships and 5 European Cups) however in recent years Manchester United have usurped them to be the most successful club since the inauguration of the Premier League.

Although the rivalry is bitter and some fans don't get on at all, Scousers and Mancunians generally do get on in everyday life. Coming from a town in between the two cities, I have to put up with the good natured banter between the two sets of fans however don't get between them in the build up to a United-Liverpool game!!!

I think your boyfriend and your family are capable of getting on, even if they don't agree on football, to use who they support as a reason is a little childish.

Vise vera...sounds like a middle-aged street lass dressed like a nun. But seriously, when both cities resided in the county of Lancashire, methinks the 1894 completion of the Manchester Ship Canal had summat to do with it, with the fine docks in Liverpool suffering in some way or another. We British are good at hating each other - which goes far beyond mere 'rivalry', for hating each other is quintessentially British - what comes up in your mind when you think of, say, Derby and Nottingham, Sunderland and Newcastle..and damn - Norwich and Ipswich? The only city London tends to hate is Manchester on account of the latter usually ignoring the former's current 'importance' in the world and doing it's own thing with praise from the rest of the world...and also because when Britain was indeed great, Manchester was the shining city of it's greatness. Today, it still shines over other cities north of Birmingham - with some arguing even Brum., despite having more beings is in the shade of the northern city also.
The city (and it's surroundings) has its goods and bads - Where there's a Prestbury, there's also a Harpurhey. Liverpool is (and has for quite some time) been seen as the scruffy younger brother, with jealousy and 'questionable aesthetics' in tow...but to be fair - the Londoncentric media has not been good to either city - but Liverpool seems to be the magnet of all the 'wrongs in the UK' according to the red tops. Could be it may change next year, as the 'city of culture' - but I'm sure the national press will be sneering - and getting the usual morons to sneer (at the North as a whole) as well, no matter where their readers hail from.

Oak...warning someone what you'll think if someone gives you a thumbs down usually results in just that - with other morons jumping on the bandwagon! Wrong move, hermano...this is Yahoo Answers, UK - not an intellectual coffee house beside Liverpool Hope University.

Its all down to football, and the rivalrys between Liverpool and ManUre. Funnily enough there is not kind of rivalry between City and Everton. I was never sure of history - i lived there for 5 years and my missus is a Scouser and the only real abuse was a bit of tongue in cheek bantering but by in large most scousers are very friendly and happily have a laugh with anyone.

I believe that a lot of the rivalrys started due to the envy each city had for each other, lets not forget they were the first two citys to get there own public transport, a lot of things spread from there.

Actually the citys are very similar with the same problems and economics, as well as a prosperous past that was lost but is now beginning to be regained.

The hatred between the two citys is largely media made and fuelled.

My boyfriend is a Liverpool fan and I'm a Man United fan. We get along fine but do exchange words about the football LOL I can't understand why he has such hatred for Man United though where as I don't give two hoots about Liverpool. He hates United with a passion but so many do - not sure why. It's all a bit silly to me.

City and Liverpool don't hate each other, but we're not exactly respected by Liverpool either i don't think. We don't mind Liverpool really. Everton and City aren't bosom buddies as such and Everton want United to beat Liverpool at everything.

You tend to hate a successful neighbour more than a stranger.

Manchester United are jealous of Liverpool's record of five European titles, 18 league titles, and the Beatles. Liverpool are jealous of Man United's bigger fan-base, the legend of the Busby Babes and the sympathy and fame that came from the Munich disaster (which they don't feel was adequately mirrored in the wake of Hillsborough and Heysel) - and they're seriously unhappy that they have yet to win the Premiership.

Each wants to be the premier club in the North-West, probably more than either wants to outdo Chelsea or Arsenal. People are strangely small-minded that way.

But to not get on with someone socially just because of the football team they support... that's just stupid.

Started with the canals, Manchester got a canal and could build boats, taking the native Liverpool industry and creating unemployment, its raged ever since.
