I took my computer to a local person to get it fixed, he charged me $110 to get a new hard drive and cd rom. After a week it crashed, he said it was nothing he did. He is refusing to help me and he still has my old data which he said is not retrievable. He also was supposed to add Microsoft for me and never did. My kids use the computer for games and sometimes the internet so how could I have caused it to crash in a week? What can I do? Can I bring him to court? Should I let others know that he is a con artist?

did the "con artist" makes you sign somekind of paper saying he would not responsible if something would to happens to your computer?

if you did signed some kind of agreement, you can't take him to court. if you didn't sign anything, you should consider a small clain court to pay for your computer.

when you take someone to court, you have to prove the court of your claim. "the burden of proof", your obligation to offer evidence to the court.

normally, you should be able to transfer everything from your old drive to the new one when replacing new drive.

when you said," he also was supposed to add Microsoft for me...", what Microsoft do you mean? there are hundreds and hundreds of programs with Microsoft name on the label. be specific. is it microsoft windows, microsoft words, office, microsoft vista...etc.

if you start telling people he done this and that, he could take you to court for defamation of charactor.

find as much proof and widness as you can and know what happened to your computer before and after you took it to have him fixed it. and talk to a layer or someone knows about law and court.
hope this gives you some ideas.

Start the computer . Press F8. Try safe mode.
etcClick MY computer. See the different drives
C D E F etc. Check the New Hard disk is okay.

Without an OS you cannot run the programs.
If you have any Windows OS cd try it. win 98 or win xp
Ask the technician to return the old hard disk.
for retrieving your data.

No con 'artist', big liz, simply another 'con' piece of dribble. Take him to Small Claims Court (or threaten him with it at least). Regarding data which he says is not retrievable, this could be the case - I have heard of it and it certainly fits the picture of why you took it in, in the 1st place.
Lastly, your 'con' man idiot could have placed a non-genuine hard drive. Access Microsoft on www. microsoft.com and try and Update: they won't let you if you haver a pirated copy.

Computer repairmen do all that they can to fix your computer. If you realize the nature of the Internet, there are many places that want their software on your computer to serve their adds to you.

Wading through the Internet is like wading through the amazon, there is a lot of viruses, parasites etc. that want to feed on you.

All you can really do is get a clean install with Norton Antivirus and AntiSpyware and hope for the best. With kids 'surfing' the net playing flash games you can visit hundreds of sites, it takes only one with a malicious programmer to destroy your computer.

Handy Hint: Never go to a website advertising FREE products and Install Mozilla Firefox. Hackers (generalization) hack because of a grudge, that is usually over commercial software.
