These days, theoretical physics suggests more and more that phenomena such as mass are caused by abstract relationships we wouldn't necessarily intuitively regard as substantial. In other words, matter isn't what it seems - it would appear that mass, inertia, and gravity along with other forces of the universe are caused by mathematical or informational relationships and that the impression of substance only occurs as a byproduct of our perception.
