I grew up with Johnny on late night, now after almost 15 years, I see his re-runs (half hour segments) on PBS in So. Cal. He makes me laugh so hard, and I get tears thinking that he's not here anymore. I'm just wondering if anyone else appreciated his humor, I mean in a younger generation than he was living. Jay Leno is great, as is David Letterman, and Conan O'brien, all so funny, but Johnny was the King in my opinion, anyone disagree?

You know, when I was growing up, one of my fondest memories of my grandmother is staying up watching Carson. I was only 9 or so and she would stay up watching, eating Sour Cream & Onion Pringles, and doing her word searches. She always shared the chips with me and asked for my help finding the words. It was one of only a handful of times I shared with her!

There's a complete interview with Carson available on the Rolling Stone Website- taken some time in, I believe, the late 70s. Classic. I think the title is Johnny Carson: The Rolling Stone Interview or something rather unoriginal like that. Essential.

i suspect anyone who would disagree with you doesn't know anything about Carson and has never seen him do what he did best. I don't think that Leno, Letterman, O'Brien or anyone else on the late night circuit would dare to presume that they measure up in any way, shape or form to the late, great, Carson.

He was perhaps the most intellectual of the late-night guys, probably more so than Dick Cavett, who made something of a career of it. He was certainly a great deal brighter than any of his contemporaries, and the show people he worked with understood this and respected it.
He was also one of the finest stand-up comedians ever, though I don't know how much of the material has ever been preserved.
If you ever can, see if you can find a copy of the Playboy interview they had with him. Probably from the 1960's, and a classic.

Johnny was suave, something none of these other hosts are even close to being. He made being a host look effortless. It is sad you brought this up because it brings up such bitter sweet memories of shows gone by.

Leno doesn't come close to Carson. Johny was the best! Johny had the talent of being to play off the situation. No one did it better than him.
