I just met a woman who has a degree in psychology. I assumed she would be somewhat intelligent, but all that came out of her blabbering mouth was nonsense. Almost as if her only source of information was through books and she was armed with no practical knowledge.

A good friend of mine says that my expectations of people are too high. I think I have hope that humans are not churning out idiots but I may concede given my last thousand encounters with the masses.

I just want to stay home with my husband and my cat. I'm sick of the disappointment.

Anyone else out there feel the same? And what do I do about this?

That's just the rest of us out here in the world, Juanita dear, trying to rid ourselves of your intolerably boring company. You see, at the last world-meeting there were many votes for simply killing you, but at the last second someone had an idea for sparing your life:

"Wait, why don't we just convince her that we--the whole world--are all a bunch of blithering idiots? THAT oughta make her stay at home! We'll plant an agent with her in the guise of her husband, to keep her under surveillance. He'll have to be a totally selfless hero type, sacrificing himself for the good of humanity, to knowingly consign himself to a lifetime of snobbery, boredom, and dreadfully bad sex with a wife whose head looks like a crusty toilet brush. Well, we'll plant a cat, too, so the husband-agent won't die of loneliness."

And the rest, as we say, . . .

I think you hit the nail on the head Juanita. All their knowledge comes from books. Usually, books written by people with no practical knowledge either, just more books. Books are great as a foundation, but, one must also see that life does not always fit into neat little cookie-cutter forms. I am dealing with this very thing as I try to explain to a person from the Department of Human Services that, just because a family doesn't act just like the book on family relationships says they should, does not mean the family is broken.

As for what to do. Kiss your husband, hug your cat, and be ready to be disappointed A LOT.

I do feel the same a lot of the time, I think it might be something in the water. Nothing you can do about it, try instead to judge someone as being a good person or bad person. A lot of well educated people have book learning and no other kind of learning, A lot of people with street smarts have no book learning, it can be difficult to find people with both, It seems a lot of people now-a-days don't even have common sense. Expect nothing out of others then maybe every once in a while you will be pleasantly surprised.

We all judge. For instance, I read this question and find it utterly idiotic in that you believe that hiding with cat and husband is a viable alternative.
To cure stupidity one must interact with the doltish and aid them in advancement of mental faculties.
I realize this seems a bit frightening and even nightmarish but! The alternative is letting the supreme twits of the world take over. A most destructive action on our part.
Why not give the Psychologist some practical experience?
Why not show this individual what insanity is and help to advance her practical retardation?

God, yes, do I feel the same, and as a psychologist, and I can tell you that the person you met with a degree in psychology who ONLY had book knowlege is typical of our field- it is so ironic and disappointing, these idiots.

I feel the same way you do. Every now and then you run across a sane person though!

Well is she black? Because if not she most likely doesn't have street smarts like you. There's nothing wrong with being book smart. Are are you book smart? Do you have a college degree? Or are you jealous of her because she has a better job than you and you just wanted to put her down in some way because you are jealous?

I feel like that about a lot of people, it's not that they aren't smart, it's just people like to be right, they always think that their advice is what's best. I can't deal with things like that, people drive me crazy. I don't leave the house because I don't want to encounter people. But a lot of my problem is I think I'm better than everyone, so I automatically get looked at as stuck up, because I drive nice cars, wear nice clothes, have really nice purses, and so on. And I do it unintentionally (think I'm better), it's just that I don't feel like dealing with stupidity. I live in my own world, and I'm fine with it.

A word of advice... anyone can get a degree. You remember what to write down and then when the exams come write down what the lecturers want to see. They will give you the piece of paper that is your degree.

Yes, the idiot population is great but sometimes you get off on the wrong foot.

Book-smart is one thing. Applying practical, logical common sense to human nature helps a learned psychologist a valuable asset.

Some psychologists are so in-tune with human nature and the aberrant behavior that occurs that they apply all their education and inate intelligence to their theory in practice.

AMEN! You are NOT ALONE! I feel the same way, and whenever I make my feelings known I usually get griped at by my sister. She tells me that I just need to relax and not complain about things so much. I'm too condescending, too picky, blah blah blah...

But they're just so...STUPID! And they're EVERYWHERE! I SEE STUPID PEOPLE! Yes, I too just stay home and cuddle with my cats and hope the 95% of people who are idiots will just go away...
