Depends on the machine. Cheaper machines are generally easier to beat because the programming isn't as intelligent. More decent modules can be incredibly difficult, their programming could include strategies, techniques, and analysis' of Chessmasters. Then there are other machines that have difficulty settings, so they can be easier for the novice and challenging for the adept.

Depends on the computer and the chess program. The most difficult chess computers and programs are now on par, if not better, than the worlds best chess players.
