i was adopted at age 4 in detroit michigan in june of 1960.
i only know: my birth name- joei kohl
county of adoption- wayne county, michigan
date of birth- 3/26/56

You can start by posting on the many, many online registries available for adoptees and bio-parents who are searching. I put a link to a good place to start in the source section. Check what the laws are for Michigan regarding obtaining your original birth certificate. Some states will allow that now, most will not. I was born in North Carolina, those bastards change the birth certificates to show you were born in the county your adoptive parents resided in, so it's a real pain to figure out the truth. You can also hire a searcher to locate them. Chances are good they're still alive, they might just be in their mid to late 60s.

Every now and then I think I want to find mine. Then I think, eh, probably not. I really liked the belief I had as a kid of a poor, scared teenager with no where else to turn and no options. I obtained the non identifying info (the agency has to provide you with that much) and it totally shattered my little fantasy. I wish I'd never gotten it. Sometimes the truth is pretty ugly.

talk social services. and what are the chances of your parents still being alive? consider that.
