Manila is the gateway to a beautiful country, the city itself is not beautiful, however, there are places to see:- Intramuros, the sunset on Roxas Boulevard, the Greenbelt shopping/bar/restaurant complex in Makati (for a looksee), Corregidor Island for a bit of history, the bars/restaurants of Malate (genuine, real places with good food).

Do NOT stay in Makati, pick a hotel near Roxas Blvd by the Bay. If you want to spend money, stay at a modern hotel such as the Hyatt, if you have money and a sense of style, stay at the Manila Hotel right next to the US embassy on the bay, the rooms are ok, but the hotel is a blast from the past and wonderful. The Champagne room restaurant is great and cheaper than my favourite resto in that area called 'Juri's' on Del Pilar st. Ermita. Remedios Circle and that area of Adriatico, has hundreds of bars/restos. There are hotels in this area from 5 usd to 200usd a night and it's safe.
Makati is a boring plastic copy of any other mall type city in the world, the food is normally commercial rubbish (there are exceptions-La Tienda off Makati ave is one) and the whole area is about posing with silly motifs on your shirt, with thousands of wannabes walking around wishing they had the money to join in the yak yak.
Malate/Ermita is a great area to be in, slightly more run down, but a real visual of this country's heartbeat......

The best thing to do here is book a ticket on a plane for a cheap flight out of town to the provinces and beaches, where life is a pair of shorts, a cold beer, and a wallet full of much smaller bills.

the best hotel for me is the shangrila hotel. you will experience the hospitality that filipinos are famous for. try their buffet at shangrila if you're crazy about fresh seafood. souvenier shops are everywhere. you can shop at SM shoemart or robinson's galleria. wish you could go to boracay. see my pic? that was taken from boracay, white sand beach and if you like to exlore caves and do some water sport, it's all there. have a grand vacation and enjoy!

Manila has the best 5 star hotels. I had the opportunity to see and stay in all of them for free.
In the Roxas Boulevard area, is you are fond of history, Manila Hotel is the best. If you want to stay by the CCP area, then check in at Philippine Plaza. If you want the best buffet for breakfast, then check in at Heritage and enjoy the Casino there, it is accessible to taxis and jeepneys.
If you want to stay in Makati, Shangrila, New World Hotel , Intercon and Dusit are within the heart of the shopping area. Shangrila is the best so far. New World Hotel, so far has the safest swimming pool! There are rubber matings from the pool area to the shower area. I congratulate them for a job well done. I had stayed in other hotels in which I feel, anytime, I might get an accident while walking or talking a shower since it is very slippery.
Along the Megamall, Powerplant area, then Edsa Shangrila is over there. You can take a ride of the MRT.
Boracay is famous for its beaches. However, if you have more money definitely Palawan is also nice. Boracay is too commercialized. Pagudpud is also a nice place to explore.
Baguio is the Summer Capital of the Philippines. You can buy souvenirs over at the Mines Park.
Tagaytay City is another cool place aside from Baguio. However, Tagaytay City is nearer than Baguio if you are coming from Manila.
BEWARE of the street foods, you might get Typhoid fever from eating fishballs throught dipping into its sauce where a lot of people had dipped too. Others get typhoid fever, amoebiasis from drinking gulaman, sago. Better take canned softdrinks and bottled mineral water. But beware of the street mineral water. I am not sure about them.
Intramuros is a historic place to explore. See WOW Philippines over there where they feature a definite place over a period of time. See Fort Santiago, where Dr. Jose Rizal, our national hero was placed into exile. see Luneta where he was shot dead.
Malate area in Makati is famous for its night life. There are many bars there.
See the BAYWALK along Roxas Boulevard. Enjoy the nightlife over there.
Dont ever forget to see Mall of Asia, one of the biggest mall in the world. Did you know that it is even bigger than the Mall of America in Minnesotta!
Chinatown in Manila is over at Ongpin! Go also in Divisoria at 168, goods there are cheap , however, I cant assure you of its quality. Balikbayans and tourists enjoy their shopping over there. BEWARE of picpocketeers. Dont display your money and cellphone. Dont wear expensive jewelries on the street.
There are souvenir shops like Tesoros, Kultura over at SM Stores. Try also the Department Stores of Shoemart ( SM). There is always one Shoemart in every place in the Philippines, it is like Walmart!
Dont forget to bring sunblock when you go swimming here or lotions.
Jollibee is the counterpart of McDonald's. Chowking is a Chinese fastfood. Greenwhich, Shakey's are the Philippine version of Pizza hut. You can eat at eat all you can Filipino foods at Kamayan, located in Makati, Alabang, Megamall. There is an eat all you can Kapampangan foods at Cabalen! If you want eat all you can Japanese food, go to Saisaki. Try our famous halo-halo, mixture of crushed ice with sweets like ube
( yam), leche plan, beans, and alot more. You can have that at Razon's over at the Mall of Asia or over at Chowking. It is nice to have siopao with it.
