If money is no object, then absolutely the St. Regis. This is where the stars stay. Top notch service and surroundings. Two blocks from the gondola on Ajax.
Actually, Aspen is not that big, so most nice places are very close to the mountain, and the better places would have a shuttle to take you to the base so you won't have to schlep your skis. Aspen is one of my favorite places in Colorado, all year round.

The St. Regis.
The Grand Hyatt.
The Hotel Jerome.
The Little Nell is nice, but ordinary looking. The above three are more spectacular, both outside and in. The Ritz Carlton is in Aspen Highlands, a separate ski area a bit out of the main town.
I trust you mean what you say about high cost. If you're talking Christmas/New Years, rates per day will likely be >$1000. Probably they have special suites that run >$3,000. Per day.
Earlier in December would be cheaper, but snow conditions may be iffy. February is a better bet.

For a different experience, try the Little Red Ski Haus B&B. Really lovely and close to Gondola.
