I just have a hard time believing that Gender Identity Disorder is from somebody being born the "wrong sex". I think it's really psychological. And also, I am not for gender reassignment surgery. Any1 can offer me their thoughts/opinions on this?

Yes it really is a disorder. In England, a baby boy had a botched circumcision and in order to fix it it was changed surgically at a young age and was raised as a girl. He/she had a lot of trouble growing up because he/she tended to be more masculine and never felt like he/she belonged. He/she was never told of this, but when he/she was a teenager was finally told by his parents and asked for another sex change. It can't be psychological since he/she never knew or was aware of the sex change.
Gender is just as various as personality, and although personalities develop, to an extent they are innate.
Sex is something that cannot be changed, but surgery is the best option. If someone wants to labeled as a male or female, that's their own choice and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that.
It is also biological due to the fact that an extra X or Y chromosone could be affecting the level of testoserone and estrogen.

Gender Identity Disorder: A Review of the Past 10 YearsG.

SPECIAL ARTICLE
Journal of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry. 36(7):872-880, July 1997.
BRADLEY, SUSAN J. M.D.; ZUCKER, KENNETH J. PH.D.

Abstract:
Objective: To review the clinically relevant literature on gender identity disorder (GID) in children and adolescents over the past 10 years.

Method: All literature referring to gender identity and children or adolescents from 1985 on was reviewed.

Results: Changes in the DSM-IV nomenclature include (1) adoption of the single diagnosis of GID to apply to children, adolescents, and adults; (2) changes in the format of the criteria; and (3) placement in the section "Sexual and Gender Identity Disorders." Rates of associated psychopathology in children with GID are comparable with those in children with other psychiatric disorders, particularly disorders that are intemalizing in form. Biological and psychosocial factors thought to be relevant in the development of GID are reviewed.

Conclusions: Research is required to elucidate the complicated interaction between biological and psychosocial factors in the development of GID and to evaluate treatment efficacy. J. Am. Acad. Child Adolesc. Psychiatry, 1997, 36(7):872-880.

There are some cases in which a female can be born with internal reproductive males parts and have female genitalia, or vice versa. Sometimes a baby might have both external genitalia. In this case gender assignment is necessary. But if you are born with no internal or external reproductive abnormalities, you are who you are, male or female, that's called sex. Gender is constructed by society, what society says is a girl or a boy, so there is no way you are born that way, you decided what you want to be.

99,9% of the psychiatric disorders are both biological and psychological in other ways nature and nurture go together.
It can be a biological mistake as you describe it but with the help of an unstable, uncaring environment it flourishes.

I don't personally believe that it is biological either... i mean i haven't seen any medical proof that tells me that this is true. I believe that it is strictly psychological and they can fix it if they really cared enough. i don't believe in any surgeries for this problem either. Then again i don't know much about the topic of people believing they are girls when they really boys.

You are correct. The problem is psychological. God didn't make a mistake. A few human problems are inherited. The rest are a product of environment, and personal choice.

There has been no concrete evidence that GID is biologically based. From personal experience in working with severly emotionally disturbed youth (some with GID) it seems to be based largely on enviromental stressors early in life. As for gender re-assignment, I would tend to oppose it also.
