Transgender is a matter of gender identity, meaning that a person identifies as a different gender than the one they were assigned (usually) at birth. It can also refer to an individual who idenitfies as neither a man nor a woman.

A transsexual is born with genitals belonging to the opposite gender. A transgender person is anywhere in between the gender binary. They are NOT willing to alter their genitalia to fit into society's gender binary.

"Transgender" is a word that is still being defined. Technically, it is an umbrella term for those individuals who frequently or infrequently express themselves differently than their birth sex. If you will for this discussion, assume that sex is between your legs and gender is between your ears.

Transgender may be used as an umbrella term that encompasses crossdressers, (fe)male impersonators, drag kings and drag queens, and other such groups, including transsexuals. Everyone in the whole bunch values and appreciates their genitalia except transsexuals.

However, some believe transgender is a politically correct substitution for transsexual . . . including many transsexuals. When I hear "transgender" used in a discussion, I am inclined to raise my hand to find out the definition of the word as it is being used in that discussion.

Finally . . . . "trans" = across . . . transgender means across gender or, other gender if you are so inclined.
