I think that you are engaging in the generalization that your complaining about. Not everyone ignores those facts.
I am totally aware that many white folks were an integral part of the underground railroad - making sure that runaway slaves got from house to house safely through the north. It was a huge risk for them to do that! They could have had their homes burned, property destroyed, their families killed or beaten, etc.
I am also well aware of all the good white folks who helped blacks during the civil rights movement. I think the powers that be hated the white demonstrators more than the blacks! There were A LOT of white people who DIED right beside us to help us with our cause. I am very appreciative of that. While you think that aspect is ignored, please know that there is a young black woman who is well-aware and indeed appreciates the contributions of good white people.

The issue with slavery is in the pass. Your thoughts should be focus on the present issues. I recently read a book, Come Hell or High Water Hurricane Katrina, and I was slight disappointed in it. It focus mostly on racial issues than the actually event, but to be fair to the author I didn't read the entire book.
As an African-American myself, I didn't want to hear the racial aspect of it. President Bush made his apologize about the slow response. I don't give him credit or discredit, because I wouldn't know what to do immediate after a devastating incident too.
Please, don't stereotype African-Americans, especially me! I've seen the wonderful things that Caucasian-Americans have done for African-Americans. I will not put you in the same category as a white supremacy! The woman I work for who's white has been really wonderful toward me. She have her moments, but then again so I!
I love and respect all races. I may not agree with people's religion, but that's another issue. I am sorry if were put in a position to where you think the way you do, but don't include me! because I love Caucasian-Americans, and if not being disrespect toward you. Please let me additionally add how I love you, but if that offends you, forgive me!
God Bless

In addition to what you said McIrish,it's also never mentioned that the white people they blame so much for slavery were the first people in history to actually put an end to slavery. It's never mentioned that over half a million white people died in a bloody civil war to free them (BTW do you think any African country would ever have a civil war to free white people LOL?). It's hardly ever mentioned that slavery STILL exists in Africa! If they were so concerned about the horrors of slavery, then please put an end to it in Africa instead of constantly whining about something that ended 150 years ago and never affected any of them.

One of the most intelligent, well-written questions I've seen so far.
There's a movie coming out/out "Amazing Grace" about a British white guy who fought to end slavery in Britain.
Again: what a well thought-out, well-written question. Makes up for all the stupid ones this site is riddled with.

I give them credit too and I'm Hispanic. SO many people do many good, humane things in this world and are not credited. So don't think the people you are talking about are more special than people who fight for human rights everyday and don't even ask for credit.
