This is for a school science olympid club and this is very needed, you're my last hope!

They vary, but are graduated. If you do a search you will find several picture of different types of metallophones and they are clearly all made differently.

There are many different styles and are made from different materials; silver, bronze, etc. The type of the material would affect the sound and in order to get the correct sound the size would change with the material.

Can you go to a music store and measure them? Perhaps the beginning size does not matter so much, but the amount of graduation between sizes is the key? Some are bass, others higher pitched so the beginning size would be different.
