i was recently given a Betta fish as a gift for Valentines day, i have him in a one and a half, maybe two gallon vase(no plant, just the fish) i was just wondering if i could put a few snails in with him, hes in there all alone and i did have some marbles in the bottom but i wanted to see if he liked the little bit of extra room so hes all alone. and just out of couriosity, how often to Betta fish poop? ive not noticed any today and i just cleaned his vase. also, i do plan on getting a proper set up soon for him, he deserves the best. i just cant right now, he was a suprise gift at the most inopertune moment, but i love him and want the best for him, im not saying he was an unwelcome gift, just a suprise

Bettas should be poop a couple times a day. If you're concerned that he's not pooping at all, it is possible that he has impaction. This can happen with bettas kept in room temperature water, because it stalls their metabolism and causes an intestinal blockage. Or he may not have that and you just didn't notice the poop. Either way, he will benefit very much from an increase in temperature. When you set up his new home, be sure to get it heated - and in the meantime, you can put the vase nearer to a lamp, or increase the temperature in your house.

I wouldn't advise putting a snail with him at this time. Snails produce a lot of waste and while they can beneficial in a larger tank, they will just foul up a vase. When you move him to a bigger home, then you could get a mystery snail or a few ghost shrimp.

A snail would be OK, but only if you have a way to keep it in the vase. If you really want company for your fish, try a small feeder goldfish, won't more than a quarter, and your betta will do OK with it. They tolerate the same range of conditions well, and if your betta is eating dry food, they will eat the same thing.

Don't worry about the biology of the fish, that will take care of itself, and yes they do poop.

Eventually get a 5 or 10 gallon tank, and put a couple more goldfish in with it, or maybe even something else like a feeder minnow. Those are good matches.

one betta should really have a 5 gallon tank to swim in, you don't want to put any snails in the vase because they will crawl out and possibly die if you dont catch them in time. And, also i tried putting some mystery snails in with my male betta and he just did not like them at all, he kept picking them in the face, it would have killed them, and you probably dont want to get the small common brown snails either, because they reproduce a lot, and it only takes one to end up with a hundred of them or even a thousand. Also, i wouldnt try putting any fish in there with it either because they dont get along with other bettas or any other fish.

Betta is very easy to care for. if your betta accepts dried food, its great. if it doesn't, you need to feed it live food like black worms, brine shrimp, mosquito larvae or any small aquatic insects. you can clean the water once a week or once or every other week. if you clean the water too often, you put too much stress on the fish.
you can put one betta in a big community tank, two bettas with fight each other to death or the loser will runs or hides in somewhere in the tank. you can put a small mirror for him to look at and shows off his color. you'll see how beautiful he is with his fins all flaired up.

hope this helps.
