i was recently given a Betta fish as a gift for Valentines day, i have him in a one and a half, maybe two gallon vase(no plant, just the fish) i was just wondering if i could put a few snails in with him, hes in there all alone and i did have some marbles in the bottom but i wanted to see if he liked the little bit of extra room so hes all alone. and just out of couriosity, how often to Betta fish poop? ive not noticed any today and i just cleaned his vase. also, i do plan on getting a proper set up soon for him, he deserves the best. i just cant right now, he was a suprise gift at the most inopertune moment, but i love him and want the best for him, im not saying he was an unwelcome gift, just a suprise.

Keep in mind betta are betta not people. The only social modes a betta has is threat display, fighting and mating. (Actually mating often involves the 1st 2.) He'll be happy being alone, and an hour or so of mirror time a week. As far as the vase it's not ideal, but you'll need to change the water often, and he need to be kept warm. (75-85F) A 2.5-5 gallon filtered tank is really best. Also realize he'll happily eat himself to death if you let him.

I just recently bough my betta fish. I started him off in a one gallon tank. That lasted 2 days! After doing a lot more reading I realized a gallon isn't enough. My little fish now has a 5 gallon tetra tank, a tetra whisper filter, and a tetra submergable heater. He is happyx1000. Makes bubble nests, swims everywhere. Take advise from G, he knows what he is talking about and has helped me greatly!

I have only had him for about 2 weeks. I didn't think a little fish could cost so much, but when shopping for supplies I do recomend Walmart. The tank was 15 dollars less than it was at Petco, for the same exact thing! Yes I learned plastic plants are not good for thier fins, I am now looking into the silk plants everyone is suggesting. def. use yahoo answers and other reliable sites for betta care. This info is so very helpful. Good luck with your fishy!

:) glad you're getting a proper home for him, I am a betta lover, and as such i feel i need to make sure you know what a proper home is, because most people don't. don't take it as an insult if you do already know this, just most people are misinformed. that is at the bottom.

as for the snails, hold off on the snails until he's in a proper home, they are very dirty and will make the water toxic fast without a filter.

good set up:
*2.5 gallon tank or 5 gallon tank
*a few silks plants, plastic can rip their fins.
*a filter (whisper power filter for 1-3 gallon tanks is perfect for a 2.5 or 5 gallon tank) if you have a 5 gallon tank full water changes aren't needed with a filter. if you have a 2.5 gallon tank full water changes are only needed once a month to every other month.
*a 7.5 watt mini hydor heater for the 2.5 gallon tank or a 25 watt heater for the 5 gallon tank. a thermometer also to watch the temp, make sure is stays around 78°F to 80°F.

after you provide him with these things a mystery snail would make a great tank mate!

A snail could be ok, yet provided which you have a thank you to maintain it contained in the vase. in case you incredibly need enterprise on your fish, attempt a small feeder goldfish, will no extra suitable than 1 / 4, and your betta will do pleased with it. They tolerate the comparable variety of circumstances nicely, and if your betta is ingesting dry nutrition, they'll devour the comparable component. do no longer difficulty concerning the biology of the fish, which will take care of itself, and sure they do poop. finally get a 5 or 10 gallon tank, and placed a pair extra goldfish in with it, or possibly even something else like a feeder minnow. those are reliable suits.

he is really fine without a tank mate (or vase mate) and if you do want one you can go to a store and get a java fern and tie it to a rock and he will like that more. or a silk aquarium plant that fills the vase that can go in his new home. bigger is better. if the leaves hit the top of the water they will use it to anchor their bubble nest. a silk plant with large leaves will also provide resting spots.
