I want to upgrade my HP Pavillion dv5000 laptop (like the headline says!!) and i want to know if and how this is possible to do myself. I am pretty handy with tools and I have put chips in expansion slots on desktops...just never a laptop before. So if anyone can help me you, you would be the man or woman.

ps-I want to install a gigabyte card into one of the two slots!!

no u cant upgrade ur laptop by ur own. u have to send ur laptop to the corresponding HP service centre to ask them upgrade to u.

laptop parts are different from desktop, most of them are very sensitive and if u opened the laptop by urself, it's warranty is void. some laptop even use special nuts so tat others cant open it

I did exactly what you planned to do, but I did with my HP dv1000 and it was not too difficult once I was sure I had the right type of chip and a decent mini-screwdriver.
I have only two slots, so, of course, I now have a .25 gig chip collecting dust, but the system does recognize 1.25 gig and works better. I might just chuck the remaining old chip and go up to 2 gig before the chips become rare and expensive.
Good luck. Maybe you'll be able to make the "upgrade" to Vista..

I did the same thing on a Toshiba laptop. After getting my nerve up to tackle the job, I found it was one of the simplest things I ever did on a computer. Took off the cover and put the stick of Ram in the available slot and I was done. Yes it was that simple. 30-40 seconds and done.

This is the step-by step guide how-to.
Open up your PC and see what you already have in there to decide your upgrade options.
Like if you have one 512MB or 2 256MB etc. if you have two of the same you will need to completely remove one or both and replace them with better of the same speed (It'll say PC 3200, PC 133 etc... that's your upgrade factor for what kind of memory you need)

I just read what the person below said. Upgrading memory does not void your warranty. anything that does will have a sticker across it "If seal is broken Warranty is Void". You don't need to open your whole laptop, just the memory cover.
P.S. Remember when you work on your laptop, unplug it from the power adapter and take off the battery to avoid shock.

Try crucial.com Lots of good stuff to help you install the ram. My dell had it on the back, opened the cover and they slid right in.
