Why we want space, i guess because we want shelter, warmth, protection from predators, any animal wants a burrow or a nest.
We need to nest or burrow ourselves, to live and survive.

All humans and animals included have certain instinctive urges. For example we have an urge for self-protection, self-expression etc.. The urge governing a need for "space" or its opposite, to be in contact with others is called the social urge. All people and animals included have a need to form social groups. Perhaps that was and is based in protection or reproduction. The degree to which we are inclined varies greatly as their are hermits at one end of the scale and perhaps party people or family groups that constantly need to be together at the other.

I agree with 'Legant'. It's definitely to avoid undue interference. The problem with people is not the space, the problem is they want to expand their territories. We want people to accept our views, to understand us, to respect us. But for that we gotta accept their views, understand them first, and respect them as human beings...
