I've torn between my old job and a new job that I've just been offered. First of all, my new job will be paying me $1 less, but including a stipend that will pay for public transportation so that I don't ever have to drive. But, my current job has great people, (sure, it can be stressful at times which is why I started looking), and the new job seems to have people that will be just as great. I was both happy and sad when I was presented at the offer, but I start tearing up when I think I'll have to write a resignation letter to the same people who trained me for 7 years to get a position that can even move me further up the career ladder. I'm also scared that I may not do well at the new job, and I know my old job like the back of my hand.

Well, would you keep your old job that you're just as happy with, or move on to something unfamiliar that could lead to great things (if you adjust and learn quickly)?

You have to keep in mind that a job is just that a job... You can give a thank you gift to those specific people that helped you but your future is not owed to anyone. And you also avoid any problems by asking your current employer that if it doesnt work out at this next job, that if you can come back. You dont have to leave on a negative note. You can be appreciative of the training they gave you but remember, no one can wrong you for wanting to look at something new. You'll be okay just take a deep breath and then decide, once you decide dont look back. No regrets. You'll do fine. Congrats on the new offer..

I guess my answer all depends on your age. If you are young and want to experience more out of life and climb up the ladder, I would take a chance and go for the new job. You will always find stress in the jobs you take. The key is to know how to handle the stress and make it work in your favor. I am sure that all your friends at your old job don't want to see you go but, you can always keep in touch and I am sure that they would want what is best for you. Every new challenge in life is scary but in the end we learn and go on. You will also learn this job like the back of your hand. Who knows you just might become something real big and offer some of your friends a job(smile). Now if your my age(60) well I am ready to retire and I've been at my job for 28 years. So go for it.

You have to take a risk. One of the misunderstandings about changing jobs is that you can't. Sometimes you've done all you can do and it's just time to go. The people who supported you during your time there should very well understand this. If they want better things for you then they will back you up no matter what you decide to to. If you feel like this new one might be better for you in the long run, do what is best for you. You don't want to be years later saying "I wish I would have." I say go for it broaden your skills and abilities. Don't settle into a comfort zone that you will never get out of.

I think it is exciting to try something new and challenge myself. Seven years at a company is a long time but it isn't worth staying if you no longer have opportunities for advancement. Who knows? Your present employer may make a counter offer when you turn in your resignation letter. Just make sure that your letter is upbeat, thankful, and stresses your need for new challenges/advancement. Good luck!

I think 7 years in one job is quite long enough. Go, do something unfamiliar that could lead to great things.
