If a landlord in New Jersey requires a SS# for a "background check", are there forms available to protect my identity and help to avoid potential misuse of my personal data? It would seem that my SS# is hardly necessary with all the data mills that only require a name (and sometimes even PROVIDE a SS#!). I want to comply so that I can move in, but I feel I need to take a stand for the protection of privacy rights.

There is no way anyone can protect their identity anymore. You can get a service to monitor it and alert you if something happens. I am a representative of a company like that, that is the only reason I know you cannot protect it. We also are the only company who will restore it. I am sorry to tell you, but with id theft, all we can do is wait for it to happen, then take action.
