OK, put on your thinking cap for this.

Normal sleep patterns consist of a few stages, for simplicity I will say 3 stages. 1st stage- get to sleep. 2nd stage- R.E.M (good sleep), and 3rd stage- empty sleep. These stages cycle. Obviously the 2nd stage sleep is most important and this stage of sleep happens later in a nights rest and for increasing durations.

As far as 'make up' sleep. It kinda can and can't happen. Per say, you went 5 days without sleep. Your sleep cycles will adjust and you would have less stage 2/ more stage 3 sleep for the first night, and the second night of rest would be practically all stage 2 or R.E.M. You can make up 5 days without sleep in just two 8 hour nights!

Hope I helped.

No. Lost sleep cannot be "made up." That's why sleep specialists recommend going to bed and getting up at the same times every day, including weekends and holidays. That's supposed to help achieve the best quality of sleep.

The only way to make up sleep is to go to bed earlier. The old saying that an hour before midnight is worth two after is very accurate.

Popular science says no. I disagree. If I miss a night or 2 make up for it (sleep 12 hours next time) and feel great. Make up sleep works wonders for me!!
