I'm not sure I am "proud to be an American".

I am humbled to be an American, for the inheritance that has been given to me was paid for by the blood of patriots over 2 centuries ago, yet the Union still stands.

We have preserved the Republic in spite of great threats and attacks.

Our founding documents are envied by the entire world.

Yet we are imperfect, and sometimes too full of pride for our own good.

In the end (which won't come too soon, I hope) we will be seen as a grand experiment in humans submitting to themselves.

Sadly, our true calling is to be humans--a nation--that submits to the values of The Divine.

Failure to do this will be our ultimate undoing.

While I truly appreciate and love that we are free and have so much to be thankful for, I can't really say I'm proud to be an American since Bush was elected. He's an embarrassment and makes us all appear stupid for electing a drunken failure as our leader. The rest of the world is incredulous that he ever got a second term and they want to know why and how we allowed this to happen and I have no answer to that except the elections were tampered with and we have no recourse. It's pretty hard to be proud with things like Guantanemo and Abu Ghraib in the news. I can't believe our soldiers were so sick and twisted or our government so corrupt and without scruples.

Yes I am proud to be American, and to live in the USA,we have to much to be thankful for, freedom to have religion of choice, freedom of speech, freedom to walk away from some of it with out fearing for our lives.Freedom to live any where we want to in this country,to have as many children as we can take care of, we have groceries in our stores, many countries have lines to get rationed items and many empty shelves,we have a place to live, some of us have things better than others, and I am glad to have the chance to help as much as i can, I can stay out all night if i want to.Many more reasons.
Also, that my Great grandparents were able to become citizens of the US.I walk through the woods sometimes( day & night) and look up in the sky and the trees and am just amazed at all the beauty around us. I can Thank God for All of this and so much more....Peace...

I like being an American because it's a good country to live in. We're very fortunate in that regard. That's not to say I'm proud. I'd be equally proud to live in any country with the lifestyle we have.

Extremely proud. We help others, both in presence and financially. I'm not proud of what our media and the celebrities portray us to be, most of the time it's just not true. We are moral upstanding people who love to help others. The people I know would give you the shirt off their back to help you. I love this country and I love being a part of it.

I am an American, and was proud to be one because our country was a free one--freedom of speech, the press, of religion, to vote, to travel, to peacefully protest, to belong to a union, the right to an education, the right to better oneself. This was the land of the free.

Notice that I speak in the past tense...

America, up until recently, has been a great country of individuals and free-thinkers. A Constitutional Republic makes for good government.Being a melting pot, enjoying religious freedom and tolerance, our people helped defeat the fascists and nazis during WWII.

hmmm, well, in a way, I am.

Even if our country is full of fools, we have certain freedoms, and we get to laugh at ourselves the hardest.

Anyway, I am always stirred by the flag, thinking of the strife we've gone through, even if it's gotten us here, it's pretty interesting and cool
