The Radiologist is going to dictate a nuchal fold thickness of 5mm or higher as " above the mean" .

Does this mean your child h ....as a Trisomy or other chromosomal anomaly ? No. It's simply an indicator. That you may have a higher risk. It's up to you and your Dr. to decide whether or not that risk is high enough to warrant genetic counseling , and a possible amnio .

Amniocentesis can conclusively r/o a chromosomal abnormality such as Down's or Edwards syndrome. Amnio can be a scary thing .... and does carry a 2% chance of miscarriage. This is why its best to speak with a genetic counselor and decided the pros and cons and of the benefits of knowing outweigh the small risk of the procedure. The counselor will NOT judge you either way you decide ...and they will answer all questions you may have .
As for the amnio itself , I've been performing them for 11 years , and can say honestly that in my 11 years I have NEVER personally seen a person miscarry post amnio . The needle is very thin , usually 25 gauge and although looks scary , I have been told that procedure itself feels less like a needle , and more like a menstrual cramp. We rarely even see much surface bleeding at the skin, usually it literally just a little drop that forms once the needle is withdrawn. The whole procedure takes about 5 to 10 minutes from start to finish.

I now this is scary and confusing time ...just try to focus on the good things and it will make the bad seem less so .

Good Luck !

If you should be worried the doctor would have told you so, if not then I would imagine that everything should be fine. Most of the time, although not always, if there is a cause for concern a good doctor will notify you right then. It is up to you to question the doctor if you have concerns. Remember you usually only get a 15 minute window, you have to maximize this time with your doctor. Sometimes it helps to write down your questions, and if the doctor says something you are not sure about..Ask.. This is your health, take control of it.

Did your Dr offer the option of an amnio? I would definitely have it done because the nuchal fold being such a high number is indicative of Down Syndrome....It may not be but I would suggest further testing to be sure....Good Luck!

Did the doctor advise you to be worried??

The best thing to do when you hear information like this from the doctor is to ask them questions before they leave the room. They will be more than happy to answer any questions that you may have and take their word to heart and do whatever they say (bedrest, etc.) because this is another life your developing and that little life depends on "you".

I would call the doctor to confirm that you shouldn't worry. Becuase worrying isn't good on the baby neither.
