if I may give you some advice we read your question and your answers I really think you should NOT LISTEN TO ELIZABETH.

Since judging from what she's saying she doesn't know a damn thing in regards to hamsters...

Snacks:
- Sunflower seeds
- Cheerios
- Shreddies
- Veggies & Fruits (but not too many because you don't want to give the hamster the runs, NO CITRUS FRUITS because they can be DEADLY)
- Yogurt Drops, Fruit & Nut bars & other petstore items.

Toys:

- Wheels
- Tubes (cardboard & plastic)
- glass jars
- empty clay flower pots
- petstore toys ie: Mazes
- wooden chew sticks (found at pet stores DO NOT MAKE THEM)

if you have any other questions in regards hamsters please don't hesitate to contact us as our emails can be found on our site:

and be sure to check out the Our Pets page as we're lookin at expanding things with vast amounts of knowledge.

Some Added Information

I recently came back to this question to see if anyone replied below us and to be honest WHEN Janice's hamster dies I can name a whole bunch of reasons why it did pass away, please do yourself the favor and DO NOT FEED IT CITRUS and I'm actually going to say please DO NOT LISTEN TO JANICE, yes I do mean that I'm not trying to bash anyone on the board here what I'm trying to do is to educate people and if I have a problem with an answer either full or part I'm going to make a note about it because I feel as if the owner deserves the best possible answers for the hamster and doesn't not need to take bits of information off one and another and yet a 3rd posting just to try and make sense of what to feed the hamster, please also DO NOT FEED IT PEANUT BUTTER.

I hope that you don't think that I'm bashing or being rude to others because I'm just trying to be as informative as possible.

P.S. if you notice the thumbs down I can probably guess who posted that ;)

The rule of thumb is: Healthy for you, healthy for your hamster.

If you want to give your hamster different foods terrific! The sky's the limit. Get in the habit of saving a bite of your healthy meals and sharing it with your hamster. Just be sure to remove any uneaten portions after a few hours so they don't spoil. You'll soon learn that your hamster has food preferences when you start offering him a variety.

Here are a few suggestions that my hamsters love (I am a show breeder and have well over 100): spinach, cucumbers, apples, carrots, grapes, scrambled eggs, brussel sprouts, etc.. I will give them leftover pasta, pancakes, rice, cornbread, anything!

One fun thing I give them is peanut butter and/or honey smeared in the bottom of a baby food jar. You should see them cram themselves in there to lick out every bit of it. They get a bit messy but that's the part that makes them even cuter to me.

I feed my hamsters 3 different vegetables and 1 different fruit each day. I've never had a single problem doing this. The only thing that I've never feed them is iceberg lettuce though I really wouldn't expect a problem from feeding it to them. There's hardly any nutritional value in iceberg lettuce though. I do feed my hamsters citrus without a problem. I've fed oranges, grapefruit and pineapples. Some don't like them, other love them.

As for toys, they love cardboard boxes of any shape and size. Empty toilet paper rolls or paper towel rolls are excellent. You can give them on of those wicker finch nests that they sell in pet stores, they'll love to sleep in and chew up those. Empty tissue boxes are good. You can also put some small bird ladders in there for them to climb up. The obvious fun toy is the exercise wheel. Don't buy a traditional wire bar exercise wheel, by the Comfort Wheel by Super Pet. It is much safer for them. You could also build a lego or block maze. You could make a small sandbox. Get creative and your hamster will have a ton of fun!

Some good snacks are those blueberry and peach special k bars, mine really like them. Mine also like to eat puffy cheetos and those sweet seed stick things they sell at walmart(forgot what they are called). As for toys they love those hamster balls, critter cars and motorcycles, and there running wheels. They also like the small tubes they make to go in their cages and you should also buy an edible hut mine really like to sleep in them.
