This is almost impossible to do. Different types of files are dispersed throughout the filesystem automatically and indirectly by you, the user. This occurs when you install software, browse the web and even when just using the operating system.

The closest you can get is to *try* to delete the common folders that get populated. Start by deleting temporary internet files, My Document folders, Uninstalling software you installed. Next you'll really need to dig deep for hidden stuff that was placed throughout the filesystem during usage.

There are no garauntees and there is always a risk of deleting an important file that the OS needs.

Also, always backup your precious data before doing anything even closely related to the process described above.

One more thing...when it really comes to spring cleaning...you really can't beat doing a FULL c:\ format and re-installing from scratch. At this point consider making an image backup of your hard-drive after you've gotten your OS perfect.

If all you want on your system is the operating system the best way is to reinstall the operating system, which in most cases will automatically wipe the drive clean and format the drive before installing the OS. To be sure everything is gone, you can manually format the hard drive before you reinstall the OS.

You can add & remove programs and also files. Then run a registry cleaner. But you won't really have it 'clean'. You will eventually have errors, so the best thing is to re-install XP. Make sure you format completely ( Not Quick ).

You system should have come with a "restore disc." Perform the function for a restore, and your C drive will return to the state it was when new, like it was before you started using it.

Uninstall the programs to "empty" your drive. You can't completely erase it without formatting the hard drive.
