My son's lips are really dry. The top lip actually cracked and started to bleed today. I really don't know what to put on them. If anyone has suggestions, it would be appreciated!

He went to the doctor the other day because he is sick and I forgot to ask the doctor what I should do about his lips. I'm fairly certain he is a little dehydrated because he basically stopped eating and drinking for a day or two.

I highly recommend Lansinoh brand lanolin, and I have used it on my own chapped lips as well as my 5 month old sons. Lansinoh makes lanolin cream, and it is the same thing as the Medela PureLan product another poster mentioned. They do not contain milk, it is pure lanolin which is natural and okay to ingest, as many breastfeeding moms use it for sore dry nipples. However, even the packaging says that it can be used as a first aid ointment since it is a moisture barrier; it helps keep irritated skin from drying out more from water contact. Hope that info helps!

If your son is sick in any other way--fever, rash--take him in to your health care provider or ER if you do not have a health care provider. Cracked/bleeding lips can RARELY be signs of a serious condition like Stevens-Johnson syndrome or Kawasaki disease IF there are other symptoms.

If he is otherwise fine, try a little bit of A & D ointment, vaseline or Cetaphil cream on his lips applied frequently for a couple of days.. Chapsticks often have sunscreens, flavors, fragrances and other additives that might make things worse.

a mild chapstick is fine but a doctor once told me that the one and only reason a persons lips get chapped is because they aren't drinking enough fluids. Your baby may be slightly dehydrated try giving more fluids or possibly a couple oz's of pedialyte a couple times a day.

I use lansinoh on my daughter.
It's pure lanolin to soothe sore nipples for breastfeeding mothers but its safe for you not to wash off before feeding.

Therefore, I figure its far safer than chapstick and provides the same benefits.

Aloe, it's all natural and won't harm a baby if it is ingested.
