"Emotional Vampires" I call them! They seem to feel the need to suck all the joy and life out of you!!! When I encounter one, I try to recognize it as soon as possible, limit my interaction as much as possible, and if all else fails, you can't go wrong with garlic!!!

Yes, they do. It zaps my spirit and energy hearing, observing their negative comments and behavior.
If I can get away from these people, I will. If I can't, I will try directing them to something that they feel positive about and can talk about their positive feelings. If not, take a break before the negativism gets one so down that one would respond in kind. Also, I reflect on what I hear and remind myself if I am just being too sensitive. After all, that could be a possibility.
One think is for sure, the only control one has is oneself. We can train ourselves to not let these negative thoughts get to us.

Lastly, find positive people that one can get re-charged. I find that helpful.

NO, no one can MAKE you do something. However, they have enourmous amounts of pull just because as humans we rely on other people so desperatly to feel secure and needed. (thats just human nature) If you are around someone who is negative (black hat thinking) and you just cant seem to get away from it, because in reality a lot of people are extrodinaraly pessimistic, DON'T try to argue with they're logic. Debating might be fun for a while, but its like trying to teach a pig to dance, useless and tiring. (i've tried ;) just kidding. mostly)
The only thing you can really do is realize you are not in control of this person. It's frustrating to feel out of control, it makes you unbalanced, but people have their own personalities and they will think what they think.
blame the economy, blame the way they were brought up, whatever, but in the end you have to find it in you to geet up and move away from the stressful situation, because if you surrond yourself with happy positive people when those black clouds come rolling in you will have enough positive energy to handle it.

Yes. You need to take the role of helper. I do it quite often. You should always help someone in need. I love to help. You just can't feed into their state. Know who you are. Many times I have grieved for my friends who suffer or people I heard about through others that were suffering. I cryed for them and prayed and hoped God would help them. It is a gift of love and an act of your will that you continue to help.

Only you give yourself permission to let them...

Remain psychologically strong, and they won't affect you!
