China is building up it's military power to thwart any attempt by Taiwan of pushing for independence and vowed that it was committed to the peaceful development of its 2.3 million-strong military, the world's largest.

Should we believe this? Isn't this like Iran saying they want nukes for peaceful purposes? Does China really need the worlds largest military to control Taiwan?

Would China ever use those weapons on us?

China may not stike the U.S. because of fear of retaliatory strikes as you say, but, what if Iran, China, et al. joined forces against us, then what?

Mr Mind ... I think the answer regarding believing Iran and China is a simple "No." We have a hard enough time believing our own government when it comes to certain issues; putting faith in either of those countries is a stretch at best.

The greatest policy makers and national security organizations try to answer these questions every day. Arriving at an answer, adjusting and justifying one's conclusions on these topics, are career-long endeavors.

You also asked whether China would use weapons on us. I believe their thinking may be somewhat akin to the thinking of the former Soviet Union; I say that in the context of MAD, the concept of "mutually-assured destruction." Knowing we could wipe them out in a retaliatory strike would be an effective deterrent against any thoughts they may have had regarding a first strike.

On the other hand, the current leadership — or is "dictatorship" the more appropriate word — in Iran and North Korea may not be sane/level-headed enough for "MAD" to prevent them from trying something stupid.

Good questions, Mr. Mind.

I am a Chinese that live in Beijing and I belive there are some misunderstanding here. We are no longer a communism police state that have a planned economy, we now have a free market economy system just like the US. So we are not stupid enought to invade any other nations, we are too busy minding our own problems at home. Most important of all, China at the moment is too busy developing our own economic and improve the people's lives, and war is bad for business and the people are not in a hurry to die! So I don't think our weapons will be use.

China has a very large military and yes they could certainly take on Taiwan in a war although they would sustain heavy losses. They are developing a "blue water" navy but America is way ahead of them in terms of doctrine ie carrier and submarine operations.
I would not worry too much about the Iranians, Israel will take care of them if their nuke program get too far advanced for comfort.

Until USA and her allies are not occupying some-elses country apparently in their best interests then maybe you should keep your noses out of their business and stop grasping at straws to start another war by bringing up Taiwan. What is wrong with Americans they seem to want to fight everyone and they cant finish what they started in the first place.
