I agree! During the Super Bowl ( I live in the U.S.) all they would talk about was how it was the first time two African American coaches were coaching in the Super Bowl. Never once did they mention their skills as coaches. I felt it was keeping racism alive by only mentioning the color of their skin.
It doesn't matter what skin color you are. We are all equal.

Cassy, if you don't feel comfortable in the situation don't go into it. You can not carry the racism of the whole world on your shoulders. There is an arena for the fight against racism but inside marriage is not it. If you think someone does not or will not respect you then vote with your feet and keep away. For whatever reason, in the situation you mention you feel inferior so I say keep out of it. Look for a relationship where you feel respected for who and what you are, no matter what the colour of anybody's skin.

I really think most people are not racist, i think the problem here in the UK is there are to many immigrants coming in causing a lot of resentment among the population. It's easy to understand why people who are fed up with the continuing immigration problem are concerned, and when there is an outcry against it they are perceived as racist.
Think of it, the number of people in this country that was against the war in Iraq, that should indicate the majority are not racist.

Prejudice is ingrained in all of us. It is a protection mechanism first and a learned behavior second. As a society we have tried to legislate out prejudice and we have just about reached our peak where further laws will not help. In order to truly not see color on an individual basis we need to not be forced to "see" color by truly eliminating it as a factor in society. Eliminate racial quotas and affirmative action, Black History month, NAACP, "black" award shows, "black" unions, etc. I know these things have been helpful to elevate a group of people who were not elevated in any other way, but we need to start recognizing people as being people and not rewarding them because they are not white. Replace the word black with white to any of the above and you have racism, keep it black and you have heroes. With that mentality, we will never see beyond color and we will tell people that they are still second class and need somebody to watch out for them because "whitey" is out to get them at every turn and they are not good enough to make it on their own merits.
As for your bf parents, let them see you as a person by being a person and not a black person.

How do you know this? Did he tell you or are you assuming that his parents won't like you?
If you are making an assumption you are being racist against yourself.
Try. Even if they are shocked at first they may realize what a great person you are.

Because it just does. There's nothing wrong with it. If they don't want their son dating a black girl, that's their right. Some people like myself do not believe in interracial relationships. Some people don't want half black grandkids running around. If my kid gets involved or impregnated bye a black guy, I will disown her. Black culture is not the way I was brought up and I will not make a part of my life.
