I have been interviewing a lot of women for a job as an admin in our office. Professional attire is a must. I am shocked at the things these girls wear for interviews. When I have someone come in not even in a suit I immediately mark them off the list.

I may be a stickler but I just do not think a pant suit is appropriate. When you are really trying to look professional, women should wear a skirt suit, pantyhose, closed toe shoes, the whole outfit.

I am really interested in other people's thoughts on what is appropriate for an interview.

I work in a professional setting, I mean very professional. I wear mostly suits to work, as do the higher associates. Occasionally I wear a nice skirt suit. I can't imagine ever thinking some one in our office was not professional or not appropriate for not being in a skirt suit, nylons, closed toed shoes. Considering the prices on pat suits I have spent over the years. Ha! While I totally agree that if you are applying for an office position, you should dress the part. Leave club-ware for the clubs, no mini skirts, stilettos or open toed, tank tops, tube tops, or crazy colors, busy patterns, sheer anything, skin tight, etc. etc. etc. I've seen it all in the past few years here. But to get back on point, a very nice tailored suit in a nice dark neutral with a pressed button down shirt under it, looks every bit as professional as a dark neutral skirt suit with the button down shirt.

The short answer is yes. Although I don't have to wear suits, here in Boston I see a lot of other girls who do. I'd have to vote for a little less rigidity though and not veto an applicant simply for not wearing a skirt suit. If a sharp looking interviewee was in a gorgeously tailored slacks suit, tasteful shoes, with not a hair out of place and an impeccable resume and references, I can't imagine tossing her out. If you even look at what many of the high level female CEO's and CFO's are wearing you'll see some slacks suits as well as skirts. But if you're wearing slacks...look for back or side zipping ones (and do I have to tell you to stay away from elasticized waists?)

I think you are making a mistake judging a woman on wearing a suit instead of a skirt, you may have already dismissed the best person for the job. Mini skirts and tanks understandable but a suit is still professional.

I work in a law firm and none of the women wear skirt suits. I have also recently been interviewing people and most dress appropriately but not many in a suit.

Women always look great in a nice skirt suit, and I think it's a great shame that so many females now are shunning smart, female attire in favour of scruffy jeans and T-shirts. If I was an employer, I would NEVER employ any woman who did not make an effort to dress smart and professional.

I think most women who answer this question will have a personal agenda in mind, such as pushing for a wide acceptance of casual attire in the workplace. In other parts of the world, there is less leniency in what is considered appropriate attire for the specific work environment. In those parts of the world, children are required to wear a school uniform, thus they grow up with enough sense to wear the appropriate clothes for the occasion, rather than whatever they think reflects their mood at the time. You have to accept that younger women who were born in the USA don't care about their appearance nor are they interested in a career, and presume to think that work is just a hobby to pass the time until they marry a rich lawyer.

I think peopleshould wear nice blouses, butten-down shirt, NOTHING WITH WORDS ON IT, dress pants, NO SWEATS OR JEANS, doesn't have to be out-of-your-way fancy but closed-toe shoes, NO SNEAKERS!!!!! One more thing....if you think the person is good for the job...then you shoudn't care what they are wearing because when they start working you can tell them that they have to dress sophisticated or they can't work at all!!!!

You shouldn't dismiss someone for a job just because they aren't wearing a skirt suit..I mean..as long as they aren't dressed unprofessionally...then there isn't a reason to mark them off the list.
