What makes the waves to be so violent in storm?

Waves are caused by wind. The strength of the wind, the length of time it has been blowing and the distance of ocean over which it has blown are the three factors which determine the size of the waves. The most important of these three factors is the strength of the wind.
In a storm the winds are intense and will push large volumes of water ahead of them. If this occurs over large areas of open water the waves become bigger and bigger. In the worst case scenario it leads to what's known as a Storm Surge creating exceptionally high tides and waves. One such storm surge hit the coasts of England and Holland in 1953 and claimed hundreds of lives.

In the Northern hemisphere winds blow anti-clockwise around a storm with an angle of indraft of about 30 degrees near the surface.All around the eye(centre of storm) very strong winds are experienced.As the storm intensifies, winds also become very strong and converge towards the centre churning the sea water around the centre with greater force.This region is also associated with strong vertical currents.These strong whirling winds cause the seas to become more violent with mountainous waves.

Strong waves? But i do know that the Moon controls the tides. maybe it was the moon that causes the strong waves or a sudden movement of the plates under water.
