That really depends. High school sports are where you would get scouted to play and recieve possible scholorships. But some school offer walk on try outs where anyone can try out. If you are looking more for fun, do an inturamal sport at the college where you will probably compete against other colleges or club sports where you play against other people from your school.

Let's put it this way...
You are better prepared, physically and mentally, to play college sports if you also played in high school.
For this reason, if you passed on your high school sports programs, you would be the least likely to make any of the college level teams.

if you want a serious shot in college yes. a lot of schools do hold completely open tryouts, but you'll be competing against people who have played competitively for years. and high school is a great place for school to scout you and offer scholarships or walk-on opportunities

Speaking as a high school baseball coach, your chances of realistically making a college sports team are slim. You always hear of the great success stories of people who have done it, but you don't hear about the tens of thousands who didn't. Best of luck if you try though.
