Overwhelming numbers of North Koreans, backed by the Russian's first then the Chinese wanted to reunite the peninsular.
It had been divided between the USSR and the US at the end of WW II.
Massive numbers of men poured across the board drive the lightly armed South Koreans and small US contingent back to the small area around Pusan ( now days Busan ) in the South East.
