When I write on a blank sheet of paper, how could I keep my writing in a straight line? I can't use a paper under it, because it's too thick, and I can't seem to make straight lines with a ruler.

There is really no way unless you are truly gifted with the art of striaght writing (like one of my friends is). The only way to solve that problem is to buy lined paper.

Take another thick paper, thicker than the one you have to write upon. Carefully draw parallel lines on it as you find on a standard ruled paper. Run a thick black ink pen over the ruled parallel lines so that the lines stand out. You can then keep this thick paper under the white sheet and can see the outline of the black ruling on the top sheet for you to write along the visible straight ruled lines. You have to clip the two sheets first before you start writing on the top sheet.
While this may help in the short run, you can write reasonably straight if you practice writing on white sheets on which you have drawn barely visible penciled parallel lines. Once you get to write fairly straight, give up ruling the sheets with thin pencil lines. You would then find that your writing becomes more straight. Of course this requires a lot of practice and doesn't come easy! This is the way I could improve my writing.

The use of ruler is very helpful. In order to keep the ruler to be parallel to the paper. use two rulers. One vertical and one horizontal. Like this |_... keep the vertical ruler next to the paper. and move the horizontal one against the vertical ruler up and down.. This way, you will be able to write in a straight line. Or either that. you might want to draw the lines in I guess and erase them out later. Another way is to keep a steady hand when writing. But this takes a lot of practice. Good luck

If you go to a craft store or college co-op that sells Architecture supplies you can find a small plastic thing that is about the size of a credit card. it has holes in it. This is called a Lettering Guide. Architects and Calligraphers use this to make straight lines on their paper for writing. Just get an inexpensive T-square and this.

With paper taped down to a table, drag the lettering guide across the T-Square with a sharp pencil in one of the holes and that gives you straight lines with exact spacing. If you write in ink, you can go back and erase your guide lines underneath so it looks like you never had them (use a kneaded eraser-works much better). Its much better than putting lined paper underneath.

I left some links that are helpful.
