My suggestion: learn both. Guitar first, get the basics down. Chords and chord structure, progressions, flat pick techniques, notes if you want. The transition to bass is much easier and the biggest advantage I've found is when you jam, you can recognize the chords and progressions played and know where to finger your bass. Bass players are in bigger demand than guitar players. When I jam I play bass because no one else can. Bass holds everything together. But I recommend learning both. Hope this helps

Play along with a song, or download powertabs from ultimateguitar and you can play along with the notes, and like homeboy said, practice. I just started 3 1/2 months ago, I can play over 20 songs and Im in a band.

Practice Practice Practice. :).

Get a bass-teaching or bass-tips book from a music store. Or look for lessons that will improve your playing online. Or even a teacher.

I would suggest you pick some songs you really like, then learn how to play those songs. It works for me, and just by learning new songs, I become a better guitar player.
