Techinically you do not need a credit card to get on Live. However, by not paying you will have a Silver account which will not allow you to play games on Live, nor have video chats with anyone. By purchasing a Gold account ($50/year) you will be able to access these features. If you still want a Gold account but do not want to pay with credit card you can go to a local retailer with cash or check and buy a pre-paid Gold account card. Go home and punch in the numbers on the back of the pre-paid card on your XBOX and you will activate your Gold account for the duration purchased.

I don't think so. You should be able to buy a membership from a video game store and just insert the code on the card in the prepaid membership area in the live marketplace.
