Between 1935 and 1957, a period that included World War II, the birth rate rose from 16.9 to 25 per 1000 people. What was the most likely cause of this "baby boom?"

None of the previous answers reflect historical insight.

1. Men who were horny after the war WAS NOT the cause of the baby boom. Are we supposed to believe that men were uncontrollably horny for fifteen years after their return. GEEEZ!!

2. The historical reason for the baby boom was because the economy was much better following World War II, therefore when returning GIs came home they were able to get school loans under the terms of the GI Bill. Hundreds of thousands of young men who could never have dreamed of a college education were not enrolled in college and looking at making a much better living because of it.

3. Additionally, homes could be purchased under the Veterans Administration for $1 down.

4. Also, job retraining was available for returning veterans, therefore many former soldiers were able to make more money after the war than they could ever have dreamed of prior to the war.

5. It is because of these reasons that the population had a spike in the years 1945-1962 (the years you gave are not the Baby Boom years). And the average number of children added to a family was only one or two--not five or six. Couples that planned on having three children had four or possibly five. Couples that already had three children BEFORE the war now added ONE more since dad was making more money.

So it was education, jobs, and opportunity NOT testerone that led to the Baby Boom.

And there you have an accurate answer from an historian's point of view using actual historial insight.

The baby boom was partly because every soldier in the war were mostly young men, and had wives at home, when they got back from war, after not seeing their wives for two years, they got busy, and made their wives pregnate durring the same time, producing the baby boom. there is also the second baby boom, where all the children in the first baby boom grew up, got married, and produed the second baby boom.

It is their rampant criminal activity. According to Obama Department of Justice statistics, while Blacks are roughly 15% of USA population, they commit around 40% of all crimes, and around 65% of all petty crimes. Have you ever wondered why the agricultural production in Africa dropped more than 50% during 1958 and 1971? Was that not the time the Europeans stopped having colonies there? AND IS STILL NOT UP TO 1958 LEVELS!!!!!!!!!!! Have you ever wondered why there are NO industrial powers in Africa other than the still largely White built and controlled industry in South Africa? Is it not odd how many, so called African-Americans wearing African symbols around, cannot even identify a mere --20-- states in Africa or have not a clue that there are more than 2000 cultures on that continent? Why is it that real Africans want very little to do with "African Americans"? I have an acquaintance from Kampala (that is the capital of Uganda for the African Americans who probably do not know according to statistics). She is married to a White USA Army Captain. She has an extremely dim view of African Americans and also has taken to calling Obama "a Kenyan goat herder".

Coming home after the war, a lot of young men wanted to see their wives and girlfriends that they haven't seen in months.

Heck, my parents may have been part of the "baby boom."

The answer Mr Curious gives that was it was not just sex is right and wrong.
I am a baby boomer one of the first.
CORRECT Baby boomers were born 1945 t0 1955
(1) Late 1944 Dads who were captains and above came home early (my Dad was a captain because he was a doctor) they did celebrate by having sex.
(2) Late 1946 most men came home. Mums had been working hard and could now rest so were more likely to get pregnant
(3) Most IMPORTANT food rationing began to reduce
Milk was available for babies so the babies survived, remember before this over 50% of babies died, especially boy babies.
(4) Women's pregnancies ran full term , they weren't being bombed, weren't over-working and essentially were eating better. During the war a pregnant woman was allowed one orange a week, very little meat/protein, fat or much else
(5) Food again- in the war ships taking food around the world were often bombed. Now food could be grown, moved around with-out fear.
(6)Food again "During the 1940s frozen food storage became widely used by consumers. Refrigeration technology began hopping in the 1950s and '60s when innovations like automatic defrost and automatic ice makers first appeared." www.history.com/exhibits/modern/fridge.html -
this meant healthy non-contaminated food
(7) Housing - governments poured money into housing and young couples had room to begin a family
so WE BABY BOOMERS
-worked and gave taxes for your generation, changed things so
YOU expect your babies to live; to be paid a reasonable wage;
to be treated fairly
When I was young in Africa, blacks were treated as inferiors .
In America and other Western countries hispanics, Jews and basically everybody except white males were treated badly. My generation people like me campaigned to stop that.
When I was young children did as they were told; children were told to be seen and not heard
There was no technology my generation made technology, Bill Gates was a baby boomer.
When I was young everything was made for adults -there was no pop music, we made that, no clubs for people under 30yrs, few children's books, toys were very basic, no special designs for young people's clothes we wore school uniform and small versions of adult clothes, no chat lines, young people were discouraged from talking.
CHILD ABUSE -Pedophilia was accepted as the norm. Parents didn't just spank their children, they could beat them my generation made the laws that stopped that. At school we were caned (beaten with a stick on the hand or bottom) if we did one thing wrong. My generation campaigned against that. AND the world was at continual risk of destruction from nuclear war people like me campaigned against that.
Am I a little pissed off? Sure I am. We were told what to do but we suffered to bring a better world and do the 'now' generations care it doesn't seem so. We genuinely cared, we wanted and fought for rights and now the 'now' generation does not seem to care for others at all. The 'now' generation just seems to want money and pleasure. Kindness is no longer valued.

Soldiers leaving for war, coming home on leave, and the end of the war. The war put alot of fear in people at that time. Many couples married quickly out of fear that they'd never be able to continue their love for each other. My siblings were the result of "coming home from the war".
