You can take the old memory out and take it down to Best Buy where they can tell you what kind it is and how fast it is rated...

You really should look up your computer on the internet to see the specifications to see how MUCH memory you can put into it...

Some old computers could only hold 128 or 256 Mb of memory...

I was going to fix up one of my old computers for my 11 yr old son but my wife talked me into getting him a new one instead... you can buy a really CHEAP one these days for about $300 (I was going to upgrade to WinXP for $199.. so it is only $100 more for the computer...

There are also some organizations that will sell you a really cheap computer for a child (child education groups) so you may want to check into them...

Bob, that dog will not hunt. Whatever you do it will never be able to do more than boot, with luck. I take the mobo out of those, save the jumpers and power supply and can them. I used to max out the RAM on them and try to use them for the net but it was a waste of money. The RAM is probably EDO or PC66 and it is piled up everywhere. I sell good usable computers for $50-$100 for kids, and I am sure there are folks in your area that do the same. I would go for no less than 256MB RAM, 20GB HD and a 866 MHZ+ processor, with a valid OS. Might be a good time to learn LINUX?

I'd suggest a more modern PC. 166MHz, 80MB RAM ... that's the Stone Age of computers, my friend. =)

But depending on the operating system, you may want anywhere from 128MB-1GB.

But you don't have to go spend $800-$1200 on a brand new, state-of-the-art PC if it's for a ten-year-old. Just buy one that's 3-4 years old. It should be plenty.

Too old. If you want to run anything made in the last 3 years, you need to buy a new PC.

I hate to say it, but they may not make any anymore. I also doubt that someone still makes an anti-virus app for the operating system your running. You could try eBay.

Try one of the free LINUX distributions. XUBUNTU or PUPPY LINUX should work on this computer.
