There are a lot of mixed feelings about this question, but personally, I think it comes down to what is necessary and what is wanted.

Just because every other kid has one doesn't necessarily make it right. It is a luxury and if you can afford to pay the bill and and you want to do it, that is your choice. But oftentimes, what you think is going to happen and what actually happens is going to be an unpleasant surprise.

Knowing what the thing costs and what to expect when the bill comes in should be made perfectly clear before you make the commitment.

when do you think it is appropriate for them to have one? when will your child NEED a cell phone? don't get your child a cell phone becasue it seems to be a fad that seemingly will never go away. i got my first cell phone freshman year of high school. unless your child is super student and you need to contact them becasue they have meetings or is just hanging out with friends..i think you should wait till their responsible enough to HAVE a cell phone... why rush? hope i helped!

I would say 13 or 14. Whenever you allow them to start going places with friends. I know I will be purchasing them for my children (when I have them). If technology enables me to get a hold of them whenever possible, I am, by all means, gonna take advantage of that. I'm sure our parents and grandparents would have LOVED to be afforded the same technology.
