I dont think they're necessarily doomed, but it depends on your perspective. For long suffering Pirate fans, just to be hovering close to .500 for a majority of the season is a major upgrade from years past. I wouldnt expect them to make a run at the division or even the wild card, but their lineup 1-8 is worlds better than it's been in years, as is their potential starting rotation. The bullpen took a hit with the departure of Mike Gonzalez, but they have a couple closers in waiting in Matt Capps and Josh Sharpless who will benefit from learning under Torres during the season. Their problem is that they aren't very deep, so they'll need to hope they don't get bitten by the injury bug, but the Pirates could surprise some people this year.

That said, if you mean doomed as in no chance of the playoffs, then thats probably a safe bet. If you mean doomed as in guaranteed to lose 100 games, I dont see that happening to this team. My personal thought is they'll win somewhere between 75-80 games and give a glimmer of hope for 2008.

Yeah, pretty much. I think they are still a few years away, but I have been thinking that for years! They seem to develop pretty decent talent, but don't wanna pay to keep it. I miss the Van Slyke, Bonds, Drabek, Bonilla, Bream days of 15-20 years ago. It is such a history rich club, it's a shame that they are in the state they are in now...

They have a chance to be respectable, if head case Duffy holds up, I'd like to see em sign Steve Finley to mentor Duffy, and maybe start a couple games per week to show Duffy the ropes.

yes, the acquisition of adam laroche will help, espescially if salomon torres gets acclimated to his closer role fast. but it will take the yankees payroll and a hell of a lot of trades to even get them in the playoffs. give them 4 years or so if they continue making good moves, and are ab le to keep guys like jason bay
